Week 2

This Ted Talk really made me think. It talked about things that no one ever talks about or mentions. Every human on earth needs food to survive and food has such an amazing capability of bringing us together if we let it. We can learn so much about one another through different cultural foods. Although now our food system is so broken, we eat food that's so far from its original source that there is no Nutrional value anymore. This does nothing for our bodies, and we are all so busy now that we eat so quick and, on the go, which means there's no time to have a meaningful meal with family and friends. I found this ted talk eye opening because so much about of food system has changed and been broken.

I also had no idea about the racism behind agriculture. Alkon mentioned that without the knowledge of the enslaved people, many if not all of the early American colonists would have starved. I found this very interesting because I never learned about that in school. We are also making fresh food so expensive to buy while processed food is so cheap, making it hard for low-income families to find a healthy option. If its so expensive to buy a little bit of fresh food but a whole pack of processed chicken nuggets is super cheap then families have to choose the cheaper option to feed everyone. This just isn't right, and it just proves that the food system is very broken.

It's time we make a change to our food system; we need to get involved to end racism and sexism in agriculture, get better work environments, and get better wages for our local farmers. We need to eat more cultural foods and take our time with our meals, to really enjoy all the things food can offer to us. We need to go back to letting food connect us and let food give us the gift of learning about one another. Food can be medicine if we let it be.
