Farmworker Food Insecurity

We have discussed many times about how many farmers do not make enough in profits to support themselves, and how they are often in debt because they take loans to buy supplies. When we talk about these farmers, we focus on those who own the land or directly work under a corporation, not those below them. The manual labor that farmworkers have to perform for such little return is depressing, especially when we realize how much work it takes to actually keep subjugating these people.

Migrant workers are nothing new to the history of the US, but many people choose to ignore that fact and look down on them. The pressure that has been applied to Mexico by the US, The world bank, etc...  negatively impacted the state of agriculture that has created a surge in migrants for decades. The loss of revenue pushed millions of Mexican people to migrate to the US in search of work. Here they have faced more hardship.

The consequences of imposing its will on another country haunt the US agriculture system, and it has become a major modern political issue. The prejudice that people hold against migrants has led to a rise of anti-immigrant legislation, but this does not stop the process of new immigrants coming in and remove current illegal migrants. It keeps migrants (legal and illegal) in a vulnerable state. This all works to keep migrants from making a reasonable wage and access to services. Many workers do not have stable housing due to work, access to food, or access to food stamps. The lack of food and other basic rights is a product of governmental and corporate greed that wishes to benefit from the labor of workers without the responsibility of protecting them.

Amazingly worded Jesus! I especially love your last paragraph and completely agree with you. These issues are a direct result of governmental greed that is heavily influenced by prejudice, specifically Mexicans in this case.

Chapter 4 and conclusion

I found reading about rotational swidden agriculture very intriguing. I had never even heard of this before, so it seemed very resourceful...
